Beginning with the indomitable Dr. Kate and the philanthropist Howard Young, a vision of bringing first class medical care to the Northwoods area came to fruition in 1977.
In 2011, the Howard Young Foundation leadership embarked on an ambitious and vital initiative to ensure quality healthcare for generations to come in the Northwoods.
An essential element of the initiative was the creation of the Women’s Legacy Council (WLC).

Our Purpose
To Educate, Engage and Empower women to join together in support of Howard Young Medical Center and its efforts to improve healthcare for residents and visitors in the Northwoods.
Based on models throughout the country, Women & Philanthropy volunteer groups have a vision to bring about positive and necessary change in the world through women’s philanthropy.
A core group of sixteen women came together with the purpose of partnering with other women to continue our heritage by sustaining the high quality healthcare in our community. Guided by their values and visions, the WLC is supported by over 300 individuals, all sharing the strong belief in the future of a legacy begun so long ago.
